Future of London‘s Making the Most of London’s Waterways Conference took place on 20th June 2019.

The full-day conference brought together a cross-sector network to share practical approaches to enhancing waterways and waterside spaces as well as managing competing demands – with a view to highlighting lessons which can be applied individually or strategically across any city.

CRP’s Director Susannah Wilks and former CRP Director Dr. Savas Sivetidis also led a Thames Walkabout Tour during the conference highlighting how diversifying the use of waterways including public access and cultural amenities on private land, was all part of the masterplan when redeveloping the Southbank and More London Estate (London Bridge City).

CRP was honoured to attend the launch of the fantastic Illuminated River project on 17 July. The first four of 15 Thames bridges were lit up by American artist Leo Villereal’s installations, including the Millennium Bridge, one of CRP’s flagship projects.

CRP has been extremely pleased to be advising the Illuminated River project right from the start. We look forward to the lighting of the remaining 11 bridges, especially the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Bridges.

There is an exhibition all about the Illuminated River project running at the City of London Corporation’s Guildhall Art Gallery. The CRP team can highly recommend a visit.

London is officially the world’s first National Park City. On 22 July, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan co-signed the London National Park City Charter which aims to make people, places and nature better connected in the capital. It is part of the Mayor’s plan for at least half the capital to be green by 2050.

Green spaces improve people’s sense of well-being, creating a space for relaxation and exercise, and can be a refuge from noise. Trees and plants provide carbon storage and reduce the amount carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Read more about the benefits of urban greening in CRP’s Healthy Greening Report.

London’s National Park City Festival runs from 20 – 28 July 2019. It is an opportunity for people to discover London’s outdoor spaces, from parks to wildlife habitats to rooftop gardens. It is also an opportunity for communities, organisations and experts to share their knowledge to make the city greener, healthier and wilder. Join one of the hundreds of events taking place around the city themed around community, culture, environment and wildlife, health and fitness and making London greener.

After four exciting years at CRP, Tanja Dalle-Muenchmeyer will be moving on. Before deciding what’s next, Tanja will be taking a year out to spend time travelling the globe with her family!

CRP has successfully completed delivery of its partnership Camden Ability Project. The project was delivered in partnership with the Business Disability Forum, and supported Camden residents with disabilities and long-term health conditions into sustainable employment, with a range of local employers. The project was funded by Camden Council and worked closely with Jobcentre Plus and teams within Camden Council. The full report can be found by clicking on the link here.

CRP staff attended a one-day Writing Skills training course delivered by Emphasis Writing on Thursday 11^th of July.

The CRP team prepared in advance by sending their writing samples to experienced writers, to inform the training delivered to them. The CRP team were then taught how to write winning articles, letters and emails.

At the end the CRP team was given various support materials. Everyone found the training session very useful!

Through the Central London Sub-Regional Transport Partnership (CLSRTP), CRP commissioned Lowick Group to carry out a study of innovations in transport funding for borough officers.

In light of the ongoing constrained budgets available to local transport authorities, as well as local government more widely, it is crucial to ensure that all potential areas of funding are examined and understood for their potential to fund both statutory and non-statutory services.

A number of opportunities for extending best practice and developing new approaches were identified, including:

New private sector investment, and underutilised public funding pots for Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure
Targeted workplace parking levies
Benchmarking fees for car clubs and mobility services, to ensure effective, fair management of kerbside space and incentivise the switch to cleaner vehicles.

This research project was based on a workshop with boroughs, desk research, and a benchmarking exercise around certain key areas, to provide an assessment of existing and potential funding sources and models for London transport authorities, including services that link with other borough departments and external organisations.

A YouGov poll of 2,013 adults aged between 18 and 24 who drink in bars, clubs or pubs found that 72% said they had seen some form of sexual harassment.

CRP attended the Mayor of London’s Women’s Night Safety Summit on 19 July, where they launched their Women’s Night Safety Charter Toolkit.

Crime and fear of crime limits the freedom and choice that women have. The Charter is a voluntary pledge to show that your organisation takes women’s safety seriously.

CRP is proud to be on the growing list of businesses in London who are acknowledging that safety for women is an issue and would like to be proactive about improving it.

CRP is looking forward to working with its partners to improve night safety through as many measures as possible, including lighting and design.

Well done to our partners Haringey and Southwark Councils for their successful bids to the government’s Future High Streets Fund. 50 local authorities across England were successful out of the 300 who we understand bid.

The Government’s £675 million Future High Streets Fund was set up to help local areas respond and adapt to major changes.

On 9 July CRP launched Healthy Streets Everyday with a meeting attended by over 20 key partners, including 16 London Local Authorities, who are set to be involved in the three year Mayor’s Air Quality Funded project.

Hosted by the University of Westminster, the launch consisted of a series of talks by the University’s Dr. Rachel Aldred, as well as the Greater London Authority’s Poppy Lyle, the London Borough of Hackney’s Tyler Linton and Transport for London’s Kerry Meehan. The topics of these talks focussed on monitoring, communications, funding, key definitions and plans for Car Free Day on 22 September 2019.

In addition, Doolin O’Reilly from London Borough of Hackney delivered a workshop that shared Hackney’s experiences of delivering play streets.
