Good luck to Climate Action Fund submissions

16th December 2019 / Posted by Susannah Wilks

CRP has been pleased to support a number of outline applications to the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund. This is the first time that the fund has been made available, and it represents an exciting opportunity for collaborative, community-led applications of various scales to actually take action on things like carbon emissions, air quality, sustainable travel, resources and waste management.

CRP wishes all Climate Action Fund applications the best of luck with their submissions.

Healthy Streets Everyday – plans for 2020

16th December 2019 / Posted by CRP Team

This November, CRP meet with all Healthy Streets Everyday partners to discuss their plans for 2020, whilst stimulating some creative discussions. With 11 out of 16 HSE London boroughs declaring a climate emergency, 2020 will see the development of a school streets programme across several boroughs. In preparation for this, CRP have commissioned London Borough of Hackney to run a technical school street programme from the end of January. The aim is to accelerate the implementation of school streets (where roads next to schools temporarily close to become pedestrian and cycle zones during the school opening and closing times), whilst supporting partners to overcome technical and practical challenges.

We are also collaborating with our partner, Global Action Plan, to celebrate the development of our school streets via Clean Air Day on 18th June 2020. We will use this opportunity to tell a HSE pan London School Street story via our HSE webpage.

Our partners have exciting plans to make air quality related events more effective. This includes residents co-designing larger events in Wandsworth. In Lambeth they will create a Portuguese themed carnival to celebrate World Car Free Day in September. Haringey are taking good strides to embed an Open Street event in Easter, and The Northbank will work with the London Design Festival to promote low cost public realm solutions via a competition which will see a young designer showcasing their work in a HSE streetscape improvement.

The final big theme for 2020 is traffic regulations which will see the reduction of rat runs in residential areas. Several partners aim to implement experimental traffic orders to allow communities to experience change in real time over several months before adopting changed use of these streets. They are using HSE to find creative and unconventional ways to consult residents to promote positive change and lasting impact. 2020 is going to be a busy year!

A Talent Framework for the Creative & Digital Industries in South London

16th December 2019 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

Cross River Partnership continues to develop the commissioning framework for the Talent Development strand of the South London Innovation Corridor. The framework will outline relevant employment initiatives that support disadvantaged groups into work, as well career progression for those already in work.

Thanks to valuable input from the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Wandsworth, as well as insightful interviews with representatives of the creative and digital industries, the framework is shaping up to be a valuable resource over the next few years.

Working with consultant company, Roseveare Projects, CRP expects to complete the framework next month. For more information, please visit the Creative and Digital Industries project page, or e-mail CRP Project Manager, Sefinat Otaru, or Project Officer, Rachael Aldridge.

Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood Report launches

16th December 2019 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP are happy to launch a reflective summary report for the Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) project, which took place between July 2016 and March 2019.

The Marylebone LEN is an example of a successful partnership working to ensure air quality best practice is now part of business as usual for local stakeholders. There were many projects within the wider Marylebone LEN, including an innovative school engagement programme, anti-idling campaign, parklet design competition and a diesel parking surcharge scheme, which is now a permanent feature in the area, contributing to the Schools Clean Air Fund. These projects engaged with thousands of  individuals over the two-and-a-half year programme.

The report gives an overview of the key achievements that were delivered in partnership with the Marylebone LEN project partners, and we are excited to be celebrating the hard work that went into all the initiatives to help improve air quality for Marylebone’s residents, businesses and visitors.

London’s first shared electric van for businesses launches in Brixton

16th December 2019 / Posted by CRP Team

As part of the Clean Air Villages, Defra-funded Air Quality Grant programme and in collaboration with London Borough of Lambeth, Zipcar and Brixton BID, a fully electric van is now available for businesses in Brixton to use.

CRP business engagement in Brixton led to the development of an idea involving a shared electric vehicle. London Borough of Lambeth were able to secure funding for the vehicle itself and enable Zipcar to lease their first fully electric van. The Renault Kangoo ZE named ‘Evie’ will be free for the first year to local businesses.

The scheme aims to promote behaviour change around the concept of shared vehicle clubs and electric vehicles. The scheme will reduce pollution in the area, as every journey made using the electric vehicle will result in zero tailpipe emissions, versus a journey made by a diesel equivalent, which would be highly polluting in comparison. The scheme’s timing is critical, as the ULEZ expands into Brixton come October 2020. Many businesses own vehicles that are not ULEZ compliant. Deciding not to continue to own a vehicle for business use and using a shared scheme could be a real game changer for many businesses. It could significantly reduce costs and reduce the number of unnecessary journeys made, resulting in reduced pollution and congestion.

Developing the Creative & Digital Industries in South London

25th November 2019 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

Cross River Partnership is delighted to be working with Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Wandsworth Councils on the South London Innovation Corridor. SLIC is a partnership between the four boroughs to develop the local creative and digital industries by offering;

• business support
• talent development and
• affordable workspace

We are developing a commissioning framework for the Talent Development strand that outlines cross-borough creative and digital employment initiatives to support disadvantaged groups into work in the creative and digital industries. The framework will also outline initiatives that support career progression. We will examine the causes of the lack of diversity within the creative and digital industries, the most efficient and effective interventions so far, as well as the best approach to commissioning talent development schemes.

CRP is collaborating with John Roseveare Projects on the delivery of this exciting commission.

We look forward to sharing our results early next year!

Is ‘City Move’ the future of road-user charging in London?

22nd November 2019 / Posted by CRP Team

Sylvia Barrett, Research Manager at Centre for London, presented the Green Light report to the Central London Sub Regional Transport Partnership (CLSRTP), coordinated by CRP, at their last meeting. The report outlines a new road-user charging scheme aimed to help create a healthier, more liveable London.

London has long been a forerunner in transport innovation, particularly when it comes to road-user charging. The introduction of the Congestion Charge in 2003 followed by the ULEZ in 2019 encouraged better use of road space, with the latter helping combat the air quality challenges the capital faces. Data suggests that roadside NO2 concentrations in London have decreased by 29% as a direct result of the ULEZ.

City Move is a proposed distance-based digital platform and app which would replace both the existing Congestion Charge and ULEZ, creating a single pan-London charging system for all. This proposed scheme aims to be fairer for road-users by reflecting the impact of individual journeys, charging less for drivers using cleaner vehicles and travelling in less congested areas. Above all, the platform would encourage drivers to leave their vehicles at home by suggesting alternative travel options.

As London is always looking ahead for new and innovative ways to manage its traffic, could this be on the agenda for the future of road-user charging in the capital?

Please visit the CLSRTP project page or contact Tom Linton-Smith for more information.
