Future of London‘s Making the Most of London’s Waterways Conference takes place on 20th June 2019.

Development around London’s waterways is surging, putting pressure on waterside spaces to cater to diverse uses – living, leisure, commuting, freight – while safeguarding the environment. At the same time, fragmented ownership and management of waterways bring a host of governance challenges.

The full-day conference will bring together their cross-sector network to share practical approaches to enhancing waterways and waterside spaces as well as managing competing demands – with a view to highlighting lessons which can be applied individually or strategically across any city. CRP’s Director Susannah Wilks, will also be leading a Thames Walkabout breakout session during the conference.

CRP are extremely pleased to announce that our 16-borough Healthy Streets Everyday project will be funded by the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund Round 3.

As per the proposal, CRP will receive £875,000 in MAQF funding to jointly deliver streetscape improvements, traffic regulations, car free events, standardised guidance & communications and comprehensive evaluation & monitoring.

Speaking about the funding, Susannah Wilks, Director at Cross River Partnership, said: “Cross River Partnership is absolutely delighted to be delivering this Mayoral Air Quality-funded Healthy Streets Everday programme, with 16 of London’s 33 boroughs, over the next three years.”

CRP are pleased to announce £500,000 funding from the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund Round 3 for our Clean Air Thames project.

The project will retrofit 11 river vessels, including tugs and passenger transport, cutting their emissions by up to 90 per cent.

Speaking about the funding, Susannah Wilks, Director at Cross River Partnership, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with the Mayor of London, the City of London Corporation, the Port of London Authority and other organisations on retrofitting River Thames vessels to improve Air Quality for Londoners.”

CRP congratulates the Illuminated River for being nominated in the Culture Category at New London Architecture’s annual New London Awards.

The Illuminated River will be a long-term art commission on an unprecedented scale; a scheme to light 15 of central London’s bridges along the River Thames, starting this Summer. The project is led by Sarah Gaventa, Director of The Illuminated River Foundation.

CRP is extremely pleased that the first phase includes its original flagship project, the Millennium Bridge, and has enjoyed advising The Illuminated River Foundation on strategic aspects of the project ever since the original idea first came about.

The New London Awards, presented in association with the Mayor of London, celebrate the very best architecture, planning and development schemes making the capital a better place in which to live, work and play.

Fingers crossed for when the winners are announced on the 3rd July 2019.

Global Pride Month takes place every year in June and celebrates the heritage of the LGBT+ community and its triumphs over adversity.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a number of demonstrations which were carried out by members of the LGBT+ community in 1969 which responded to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.

As part of Pride Month, CRP’s accountable body Westminster City Council is running a series of events to celebrate.

These range from a Comedy Night, a Being LGBT+ in Business Discussion Panel and a LGBT+ Mental Health Awareness Panel. In addition, Westminster City Council will be having a float at the London Pride Celebrations on July 6^th.

CRP is also taking part in a decoration competition to celebrate and raise awareness of Pride Month. We shall share the result and our entry for the competition next month.

As London’s Low Emission Neighbourhoods become increasingly important, Cross River Partnership (CRP) is convening a workshop hosted by Councillor Karen Scarborough, Lead Member for Air Quality and the Environment at Westminster City Council. This workshop, supported by the Mayor of London and his Air Quality Fund, will present best practice for Low Emission Neighbourhoods and ensure that lessons learnt are carried forward.

There will also be a number of breakout sessions taking place led by Westminster City Council, City of London Corporation, Team London Bridge, Better Bankside and Northbank BID.

As part of Clean Air Day 2019, CRP is proud to announce that it is filming a video based on our Clean Air Route Finder. The video, that will showcase a side-by-side comparison of a polluted and non-polluted route to the same destination, will premiere on 20^th June on our YouTube channel. The Clean Air Route Finder, designed in partnership with King’s College London and the Mayor of London, was a runner-up in the Sustainable Mobility category at last year’s Sustainable City Awards.

In line with the government’s policy of selling assets where there is no policy reason for continued public ownership, Network Rail has recently sold off a large number of railway arches. The primary sale objective for Network Rail is not to prejudice the safe and sustainable management of the railway infrastructure and this has successfully been achieved.

However, some recent experience seems to show that small and micro businesses located in the railway arches could be put at risk. It has emerged that the new owners of the arches have increased rents by up to 85% or are being evicted for not fitting their business model.

This goes to show the challenges in creating long-lasting, sustainable, vibrant and healthy commercial high streets in a city as dense and highly prized as London.

We are looking forward to the launch of the Mayor’s EV Infrastructure Delivery Plan on 17 June 2019.

CRP has been glad to contribute to the work of the EV Infrastructure Taskforce over the last 12 months and is now looking forward to sharing the resulting Delivery Plan with partners and stakeholders.

Chaired by Shirley Rodrigues, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, the 16-member EV Infrastructure Taskforce was launched in May 2018. The Delivery Plan will help identify and deliver the level and type of charging infrastructure that London will need to accelerate the uptake of EVs up to 2025.
