CRP and project partners UPS and UK Power Networks successfully held a Smart Electric Urban Logistics (SEUL) project dissemination workshop with fleet managers on 6 February 2019.

The SEUL project is successfully trialling smart charging technology integrating energy storage and developing an innovative tool to better assess and use existing grid capacity. This technology has allowed global logistics company UPS to commit to the electrification of its entire Central London fleet of 170 delivery vehicles.

When discussing the challenges of urban fleet electrification, Peter Harris, UPS’s Director of Sustainability, commented “it will take time, money and collaborative commitment from industry, government and civil society to get it right… But get it right we must.”

The SEUL project is part of the Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trials, funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in partnership with Innovate UK.

CRP is very happy to be working again with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, this time leading on their Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) Business Engagement work.

Supporting the Royal Borough of Greenwich with their LEN implementation, CRP are engaging with local businesses on cargo bike trials, workplace travel planning, as well as new loading restrictions and consolidation feasibility along Trafalgar Road.

Transport for London (TfL) have now opened applications for the Healthy Streets Fund for Business 2019/2020. Projects to be funded will either reduce freight and van traffic while supporting essential deliveries and servicing, or promote sustainable travel habits while reducing car dependency. This round of funding is only open to Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and Business Partnerships.

The application deadline is 5pm on Tuesday 19 March 2019.

The Illuminated River Foundation has begun installation work on the first four bridges to be illuminated from Summer 2019; London, Cannon Street, Southwark and Millennium Bridges.

Two years ago Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced that the team, led by artist Leo Villareal and London architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, had been successful in winning the international design competition to reframe the Thames at night and celebrate London’s historic links with its river. A lot of work has been done since this announcement; surveying and inspecting the bridges, speaking to communities and stakeholders, securing planning approval, and understanding the logistical challenges behind installing the latest generation of LED technology onto the bridges to allow Leo to begin to ‘paint with light’ and realise his beautifully sequenced patterns for us all to enjoy.

CRP continues to support the Illuminated River including sitting on the project advisory board.

Work on the CRP-managed Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) public realm improvements are well underway.

The first phase of the project is complete, with planting in new rain gardens on Marylebone High Street completed in mid-February. Works have now commenced on the corner of New Cavendish and Marylebone High streets.

CRP is looking forward to completing the successful Marylebone LEN programme with all partners at the end of next month. A final report will be submitted to the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund.

The London Borough of Camden recently completed formal consultation on a draft Clean Air Action Plan which aims to drive forward compliance with World Health Organisation guidelines by 2030.

CRP is pleased to have supported development of the draft plan through the Camden Clean Air Partnership (a multi-sector stakeholder group which co-designed the plan’s actions) and via a submission to the draft plan.

The CRP-delivered CamdenAbility project works with a network of local employers to improve disability standards and create opportunities for Camden residents with disabilities and long-term health conditions. The project is funded by Camden Council and delivered in partnership with the Business Disability Forum.

As part of our commitment to improve disability standards of our members, CamdenAbility facilitates regular network meetings, creating a comprehensive and informative forum for businesses to come together to discuss disability initiatives, share best practice, hear from disability specialist guest speakers and receive updates on the project.

CamdenAbility member Dentsu Aegis will kindly host our first meeting of 2019 at their fantastic offices in Euston on the 28^th of February.

Our members have requested our help to advise and support them to find out more about how to progress on the Disability Confident Initiative. We will be dedicating much of our next meeting on supporting them to work towards Disability Confidence, particularly on how to attain the harder to achieve Level 2 and Level 3 certifications.

Disability confident organisations play a leading role in changing attitudes for the better. The scheme helps employers draw from the widest possible pool of talent and demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion.

The Central London Sub-Regional Transport Partnership (CLSRTP) have commissioned transport safety consultants Agilysis to research actions relevant to delivering the Mayor of London’s Vision Zero in Central London.

CRP has hosted two interactive workshops for the 10 CLSRTP boroughs, led by Agilysis, where knowledge and experiences on topics such as compliance with safe speeds and safe street design were shared.

The workshop discussions will contribute to a guidance document.

Solutions that will improve local air quality in each village area are currently being implemented for the Clean Air Villages project.

In Brixton, the plan is to provide a shared electric van for local businesses to use. The aims of the pilot are to give local businesses the opportunity to have access to a free (or very low cost) shared van and to experience using an electric vehicle. The hope is that businesses will see the benefit of using a shared van for their operations, rather than owning their own vehicle, which could result in fewer vehicles on the road. Businesses will also gain an insight into the simplicity and benefits of driving and charging an electric vehicle. Adapting to new technology can be a significant barrier to change and so this pilot will aim to break down such barriers.

The Clean Air Villages project is Defra-funded and CRP is working on behalf of the London Borough of Lambeth in partnership with the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, and Lewisham, to reduce emissions from business deliveries and servicing at 10 air quality hotspot villages across the 5 boroughs.

The British Safety Council (BSC) has a new campaign, “Time to Breathe”, to raise awareness of outdoor workers’ exposure to air pollution. BSC has also produced an app, Canairy, to help employers of outdoor workers, from crossing guards to gardeners to construction workers, monitor how much pollutants their staff are exposed to.

Time to Breathe will launch on March 12, 8:45am to 10:30am at Argyll Street, Oxford Circus, London W1F 7LA.
