“Greening out the Grey” – New CRP Report

17th August 2021 / Posted by Fiona Coull

CRP’s Healthy Streets Everyday programme has launched a new guidance document: “Greening out the Grey”: The value of Green Infrastructure for People and Places.

The guidance aims to build the case for more green infrastructure to be implemented across the capital, focussing specifically on the benefits and costs of integrating green infrastructure as part of our cities.

It also aims to demonstrate the value of using greening to improve air quality, enable climate adaptation (particularly through heat resilience, air quality and flooding), and act as a tool to improve physical and mental wellbeing through initiatives such as green social prescribing.

Finally, the report provides several recommendations to enhance and improve the use of green infrastructure as a climate mitigation strategy, and to help identify and quantify the wider impacts that green spaces have on the population of cities.

You can read the full report here.

CRP and partners are extremely grateful to the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund for making this Guidance Document possible.

New ULEZ resources to help vehicle owners

17th August 2021 / Posted by Ross Phillips

As part of Clean Air Villages 4 project, CRP has created Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) guidance to aid resident and business vehicle owners on next steps to meet the emission standards (Euro 4 for petrol cars and Euro 6 for diesel cars). These standards are Euro 4 for petrol cars and Euro 6 for diesel cars.

From 25th October 2021, the existing ULEZ will expand, creating a single larger zone up to, but not including, the North and South Circular Roads. City Hall estimates that there are 100,000 cars and 35,000 vans in the expanded zone that do not meet the minimum emissions standards.

The new flow charts provide straightforward advice and signposting for electric vehicle leasing and buying options, funding opportunities and financial incentives, as well as CRP tools which can help in transitioning to cleaner modes of transport for personal and business journeys.

CRP have also created a simple breakdown of the financial costs associated with continuing to drive a vehicle that does not meet the ULEZ (or LEZ) standards.

We want to encourage all vehicle owners to meet the standards and where possible, switch to lower polluting methods, such as walking, cycling, cargo biking, scooting and using public transport, to improve London’s toxic air quality, which is responsible for the deaths of over 4,000 Londoners in 2019 alone.

River Freight Air Quality Monitoring begins on the Thames

17th August 2021 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP is excited to be working with transport and air quality specialists EMSOL, to monitor air pollution and noise levels associated with river freight activity on the River Thames. This forms part of the Defra-funded Clean Air Villages 4 (CAV4) project.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust are conducting a river freight trial, transporting supplies from Dartford in Kent, along the river and into Guy’s Hospital, London Bridge. The movement of goods to and from the river piers is carried out using electric vehicles.

EMSOL will be monitoring the air quality of the vessels carrying the cargo along the river to highlight the potential benefits of moving freight via inland waterways in London compared to using the road network.

The River Thames is the busiest inland waterway in the United Kingdom, accounting for five million tonnes of freight. This reduces an estimated 265,000 lorry movements a year off London’s congested roads. The Thames provides an opportunity for freight to be delivered while reducing the burden on the capital’s road network.

We’re excited to see the developments from this project which will inform how future sustainable movements of freight can take place for other sectors across London and beyond.

For more information about CAV4 project and air quality monitoring, please contact CRP Project Manager Kate Fenton.

This week’s Lunchtime Launch Event: The Future of Sustainable Shipping & Trade in London

17th August 2021 / Posted by CRP Team

Join us from 1:15pm – 2:00pmThursday 19th August, to discuss sustainable freight and shipping on the capital’s main waterway, the River Thames. The aim of this event is to provide you with knowledge on the positive environmental impact of moving freight by water.

For CRP’s eighth Lunchtime Launch event, we will be joined by the Port of London Authority (PLA), for a discussion on river freight and air quality issues in relation to use of the river. The port plays a central role in supporting London’s economy, so it is important to ensure it is supporting the UK’s transition to net zero emissions up to 2050. CRP will also be sharing work on air quality along the river through the Clean Air Thames project – a three-year project funded by the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund (Round 3), aiming to retrofit inland commercial vessels with an after-exhaust treatment. The session will also cover Clean Air Villages 4 (CAV4) river freight activities.

For more information about CRP’s Lunchtime Launches, please contact CRP Project Officer Rachael Aldridge or CRP Director Susannah Wilks.

Cycle to Work Day

27th July 2021 / Posted by Susannah Wilks

Cycle to Work Day is back on Thursday 5th August.

CRP’s Defra-funded Clean Air Villages 4 project has updated our Clean Air Route Finder online tool to make it even easier for cyclists and walkers to find routes across London that avoid the most polluted streets – check out your journey-to-work by entering your postcode destination.

CRP’s Mayor’s Air Quality Funded Healthy Streets Everyday project is working hard with our Local Authority, Business Improvement District and Landowner partners to increase cycling and walking activity across the capital, keeping us fit, happy and healthy. The latest case study – Calling Dr Bike: Providing cycle maintenance across London – shows how to keep those cycle wheels rolling.

So hop on, and enjoy! If I can do it, anybody can!

Free online short course on Healthy Urbanism launched

27th July 2021 / Posted by CRP Team

University College London researchers Dr Helen Pineo and Dr Gemma Moore have co-developed a free online training course on ‘Healthy Urbanism’.

Lack of knowledge of how the built environment influences the health of the public is a key barrier to building and maintaining healthy places. The pandemic and growing health inequalities have highlighted the importance of this topic, yet many lack the skills to act.

Researchers received funding to develop this course with an advisory group including representatives from; Public Health EnglandFaculty of Public HealthGuy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation, London Healthy Place Network, Royal Institution for Chartered SurveyorsRoyal Town Planning InstituteTown & Country Planning Association and other organisations.

The course is aimed at built environment and public health professionals and postgraduate students, including those working in planning, engineering, architecture and other fields. The total time to complete the course is 3.5 hours, however, participants can complete content at their own pace.

CRP’s Mayor of London-funded Healthy Streets Everyday project is proactively working with 26 partners to make lasting and transformative change to streets throughout London. The programme is helping to aid London’s continued response to the pandemic by enabling walking and cycling through initiatives such as school streets and car-free zones.

Easing of Lockdown Restrictions

27th July 2021 / Posted by CRP Team

Monday 19th July was the day that most lockdown restrictions to control COVID-19 were lifted and it is great that we can now meet up with family and friends.

As cases are still high and rising you should continue to exercise caution even if you are fully vaccinated to minimise risk of catching or passing on the virus.

The CRP Team are continuing to deliver projects for and on behalf of their
partners in an agile way. Guidance and information on how to stay safe can be found here.

Take care everyone!

Net Zero in City of London

27th July 2021 / Posted by Susannah Wilks

UK Power Supplier E.ON has started work on a £4m project to install one of the UK’s largest zero carbon heating and cooling systems beneath the streets of London.

The heat pump is being installed in the heart of London’s square mile, and will draw from the natural warmth of the earth as well as recycling waste heat from power generation. This energy can be stored in three boreholes extending 200m below the capital and provide zero carbon heating and cooling for buildings.

The project will provide 4MW of extra heating capacity and a further 2.8MW of new cooling capacity to customers across the City of London – this is a fantastic initiative.

CRP looks forward to sharing the best practice developed by this project at its future CRP Board meetings.
