Clean Air Villages partners visit consolidation hub in Dartford

29th January 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

As part of the Clean Air Villages project, we are always looking for ways to reduce the quantity of freight vehicles coming into London and consolidating deliveries in an efficient way. Whilst working on the project, CRP have come across best practice from St Guys & St Thomas NHS trust who have started to consolidate their deliveries through the Dartford based hub, owned by CEVA logistics. This is a great example to show how an organisation could reduce up to 90% of deliveries by using a consolidation method. We invited the partners of the project to come and visit the new facility to see consolidation in action!

Clean Air Thames announces first vessels to receive funding

28th January 2020 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

Cross River Partnership announced the first set of successful applicants for Clean Air Thames funding at the Thames Vision Environmental Conference on 28 January 2020. They are GPS Marine Contractors and the Port of London Authority, for their vessels GPS Anglia and Driftwood 2 respectively.

The announcement was well-received at the conference by an enthusiastic and diverse group of stakeholders. The conference itself was themed around achieving net-zero on the Thames, and touched on biodiversity, air quality, trade and economy and water, thus making an excellent setting for the news.

Clean Air Thames is a three-year, £500,000 project funded by the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund (Round 3) to retrofit 6-11 vessels operating on the Tidal Thames. Vessels will be monitored before and after the retrofit ( limited to post-exhaust treatments), and best practices and lessons will be shared throughout the project set to end in March 2022.

The second round of applications will open from 6 April – 17 September, 2020. Applications will be available at the Clean Air Thames project page.

For more information, please email project manager, Sefinat Otaru.

Upcoming events for Clean Air Villages

28th January 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

February will see the launch of our Clean Air Villages cargo-bike delivery schemes. By providing a bike and rider – free for businesses to use – we hope to raise awareness of cargo-bikes and their suitability as a sustainable alternative to cars and vans for urban deliveries. These schemes are designed to help support local businesses, as well as enabling them to minimise the impact of their deliveries on local air quality and congestion. Each service is tailored to the business area within which it will operate.

With Euston Town and WEGO Couriers, we are launching a local zero-emission delivery service in the Euston area. This will help raise the profile of independent restaurants, such as those on Drummond Street, looking to provide catering to nearby offices in a more sustainable way.

In collaboration with London Borough of Lewisham and ecofleet, businesses in Deptford will be able to deliver their goods locally, without the impact on emissions and congestion.

With London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and e-cargobikes.com, we are extending the Parcels Not Pollution scheme, which aims to reduce traffic, ease congestion and improve air quality by minimising freight movements in Hammersmith town centre. Businesses in Shepherd’s Bush will now also be able to benefit from this scheme, and can register here.

For more information on any of the services mentioned, or to find out about other schemes due to launch, please contact Kate Fenton. If you’re a business in the areas mentioned, and would like to be involved, you can register here.

Buddy programme in action – Rachael Aldridge shares her learnings

28th January 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP’s buddy initiative allows past and present CRP staff to connect and learn from each other. At the end of last year, my buddy Alistair Huggett (London Borough of Southwark) took me on the grand tour of Bankside! I got to see the legacy of CRP’s projects along the river, and even current projects CRP is working on, such as the Illuminated River. Alistair reminded me that CRP was originally formed to deliver the Millennium and Hunbergord Footbridges across the Thames, and it was interesting to see the walkway from Bankside to Southbank that CRP and its partners installed along the river. I am looking forward to meeting with the whole CRP Buddy group soon to discuss plans for 2020 and beyond!

Solutions to poor air quality for local businesses

28th January 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

The Clean Air Villages (CAV) team has been busy hosting workshops for businesses to discuss local issues relating to air quality and what potential solutions could be. So far nine workshops have been organised; four of which – in Cadogan Estates, Covent Garden, Hatton Garden/Strand and Streatham Hill – took place this month.

Businesses keenly participated in the workshops, learning more about what they can do to improve air quality in their respective areas, as well as providing the CAV team with key local knowledge. Solutions discussed have spanned from exploring trials of local consolidation hubs and/or consolidating deliveries and the use of low-emission and zero-emission vehicles.

Four more workshops – in Brixton, Euston Road, Fulham Town and Lewisham Town Centre – will be taking place in the next few weeks.

Please contact Project Manager Kate Fenton to find out more.

London Borough of Hackney shares its School Street experiences to improve air quality

28th January 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

Healthy Streets Everyday begins 2020 business as usual, with interim project manager, Tomos Joyce. From parklets to Clean Air Day, there’s a lot of exiting activities and interventions planned for the HSE programme during the year ahead.

Kicking off the new decade is the Hackney School Street Workshop on 31st January 2020. This workshop, funded by HSE, will take borough officers through the key components of implementing a School Street in their borough, from selecting suitable schools, discussing methods of school selection and the considerations that should be made when implementing such a scheme. The workshop will also focus on methods to encourage School Street adoption into local communities whilst providing an outline of the evaluation criteria required to monitor School Streets and track their success. Borough officers will then be taken out on site, where the London Borough of Hackney will showcase one of their School Streets in action.

This workshop will help HSE partners implement more car-free events as part of the HSE programme, helping make London’s streets a happier and healthier place for all.

Follow Cross River Partnership on Twitter for updates on the workshop as it develops.

Smart Electric Urban Logistics final event

28th January 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP are delighted to be speaking alongside Ikea, Scania and Innogy Ventures at Move 2020 on 12th February, on the question ‘Will fleets foster effective EV adoption?’

We will be using our knowledge of the potential for smart charging in aiding the electric vehicle transition for fleets, as well as sharing exciting news of a new project that will further expand the capabilities of charging infrastructure. Following on from our recent Smart Electric Urban Logistics (SEUL) project, we are keen to show how depot-based fleets can electrify in a cost effective way with the right collaborative planning in place.

For more information about SEUL, please contact Project Manager Tom Linton-Smith.
