Looking Ahead to 2021

15th December 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

As our sights turn to the year ahead, we are gearing up for some exciting new launches, events and collaborations over the next few months … here’s just a taster of what is to come!

After the success of our LiveShare events, which have attracted over 850 attendees from across 12 different countries since June, we will be launching a new monthly ‘Lunchtime Launch’ series, where we’ll be sharing the latest updates from across CRP’s projects, as well as inviting industry experts to discuss their latest research on topics ranging from air quality, freight, transport, active travel, energy, environment, culture, lighting and much more.

CRP’s Healthy Streets Everyday programme will be delivering multiple guidance resources and case studies in the new year. These will support Local Authorities, BIDs, developers, landowners and communities to make lasting and transformative change to streets throughout London by increasing walking rates and reducing emissions and exposure to toxic air pollution. In addition, traffic and pedestrian footfall data collected through our collaboration with Vivacity will be finalised early next year to help inform our partners on their localised transport networks and potential improvements to create safer, smarter and more sustainable ways to travel.

New solutions to improve air quality will be launched in 2021 as part of the Clean Air Villages (CAV) project, including TWO new cargo bike schemes and a new shared electric vehicle scheme to support local businesses in making clean, green, efficient deliveries. In addition, 15 new CAV walking routes will also be added to our Clean Air Route Finder tool, which will be getting a complete new re-design in the coming months, making it even easier to find lower polluting routes to get you from A-B.

CRP’s Clean Air Thames project has launched its second round of funding available to operators, with a deadline of 12th February 2021. We are looking forward to supporting more vessels along the Thames in reducing toxic emissions to improve the health of employees, residents and businesses.

The CRP sponsored Centre for London research project Lighting London will publish its greatly anticipated final report early in the new year, covering how light and darkness affect the lives of different groups of Londoners, how to use lighting more sustainably, and what it would take for London to become the best lit major city in the world. On the topic of lighting, the Illuminated River project’s next round of dazzling light installations will be completed in early 2021, and we can’t wait to marvel and share the mesmerising art for all to see.

Sustainable business and community recoveries from the pandemic are integral to achieve a prosperous and green future that will benefit the health of London’s residents, visitors and workers. In addition, the expansion of the London LEZ
and ULEZ, in March and October respectively, the Mayoral Elections in May, as well as the forthcoming COP26 summit in November, means there has never been a greater time to galvanise efforts to support the reduction of carbon emissions and air pollution in our urban areas.

There’s lot of to look forward to in 2021 and we’re so excited to share all of our new initiatives with you. Do follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn for all CRP’s latest updates and special announcements.

CRP’s Staff Spotlight On: Abby McDougall

8th December 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

This week, we are featuring CRP Technical Project Officer Abby McDougall!

Abby joined CRP back in January 2019 as an intern while studying at King’s College London. We’re not sure who or what is to blame, but she couldn’t get enough and joined the team full-time in August last year. Since then, she’s been a part of the Clean Air Villages team, promoting cargo-bikes, crunching CO2 savings data by managing the CRP measureBEST tool and developing new clean air walking routes. Abby is also involved with the Innovate UK-funded EFLES project, helping to realise the wider commercial opportunities of this innovative pilot with UPS, Moixa and UKPNS.

Transport Innovation by CRP and Partners

8th December 2020 / Posted by Susannah Wilks

Since the start of the pandemic, CRP’s Central London Sub Regional Transport Partnership (CLSRTP) has been more active than ever, meeting every month to share lessons, experiences, and best practice.

CLSRTP is funded by Transport for London to deliver collaboration and innovation between the 10 central London transport authorities: City of London CorporationLondon Borough of Camden, London Borough of HackneyLondon Borough of IslingtonRoyal Borough of Kensington & ChelseaLondon Borough of LambethLondon Borough of LewishamLondon Borough of Southwark, London Borough of Wandsworth and Westminster City Council.

CLSRTP are very pleased to be publishing a Parking Assessment Framework, available to guide boroughs with their own parking schemes and policies within the context of the climate emergency and sustainability challenges. If anyone would like to get involved with trialling this Framework, please do get in touch with CRP’s Director Susannah Wilks.

CLSRTP will additionally soon be launching a 5-borough guide to sites for Micro Freight Distribution Hubs – watch this space! This is intended to support Low Emission Freight Operators in particular with sourcing sites that enable cleaner and more efficient last mile logistics. The guide will be presented at one of CRP’s new Lunchtime Launches early in 2021.

Please contact CRP Senior Project Officer Laura Jacklin to find out more.

EFLES project: 2020 round Up

8th December 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

Back in April, CRP and partners UPSMoixa and UK Power Networks Services, were awarded over £160,000 in funding from Innovate UK’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (prospering from the Energy Revolution) to deliver the Electric Vehicle Fleet-centred Local Energy System (EFLES) project. The project aims to reduce the costs of fleet electrification and support the wider transition to electric vehicles.

EFLES launched in May and, like many things this year, experienced some initial impacts from the pandemic, forcing the team to embrace home working and video meetings. In July, CRP released a summary postcard to outline the key challenges that EFLES aims to address. Throughout 2020, EFLES has continued to receive high profile coverage, including featuring in a future Net Zero podcast, and at the Cenex Low Carbon vehicle Event.

The rapid electrification of road transport expected over the next few decades could lead to a 30% increase in today’s electricity consumption by 2050. EFLES will optimise transport and energy assets at UPS’ Camden depot, taking ‘smart charging’ to the next level in order to reduce the costs of electrification. This has never been more important, with the Government announcing ambitious plans, as part of its 10 Point Plan, to accelerate the shift to zero emission vehicles, including ending the sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.

In 2021, CRP will be further developing the EFLES webpage to provide more engaging and interactive insight into this innovative project. We are also looking forward to the UPS site receiving new purpose-built electric Arrival vehicles. Following the success of the SEUL project, CRP is delighted to continue to support UPS on their electrification journey, leading the way on sustainable urban logistics.

For more information, please contact CRP Technical Project Officer Abby McDougall.

Clean Air Villages 2020 Round Up

8th December 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

Engagement with businesses, hospitals and communities in the ‘villages’ continues, with the Clean Air Villages team offering advice and support to businesses that goes beyond the scope of air quality, during this very difficult time. Local activities, involving cargo bike schemes continue and a range of organisations, from small businesses to food banks are benefitting from use of these zero emission vehicles. Other local activities that are brewing involve an Air Quality Ambassador programme with the City of London Corporation and a coordinated Delivery & Servicing Plan of three major London museums.

Cross-borough activities have also been continuing: CRP’s series of LiveShares are going strong, with the next one on 10th December showcasing the Clean Air Routes that have been developed and monitored for the villages. Reports from the Vivacity traffic monitoring are being produced, as are reports from the telematics devices that have been used by a range of businesses and local authorities.

Finally, we have created some dedicated videos to showcase the CAV village areas in the London Borough of Haringey, London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London Borough of Islington, London Borough of Merton, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames, The Fitzrovia Partnership BID, South Bank BID and King’s College Hospital.

Lewisham’s ‘Ark’ – Taking Inspiration from CRP’s Guidance Document

8th December 2020 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP is very excited to see the launch of the ‘Ark’ in London Borough of Lewisham! A new parklet community space, funded by Spin and built by YesMake, to aid social distancing and for people to sit, rest and enjoy a refreshment from the local businesses opposite. Visit the Ark located on Staplehurst Road. It’s open to all!

CRP’s Healthy Streets Everyday ‘Creating Parklets for Community and Business Resilience’ guidance document was instrumental in the developing stages of the parklet and we’re so excited to see more pop-up across London. Read the full document here for step-by-step support on creating your own parklet, including the design elements to think about to build a truly inclusive and accessible space for all to enjoy.

“The CRP guidance was really helpful in making the case for parklets in Lewisham, the facts and data helped with responding to queries and provided a solid reference point.”
