FREVUE organises the 4th edition of the e-Mobility Stakeholder Forum

20th June 2016 / Posted by CRP Team

On 25-26 May 2016 FREVUE, together with two other European Commission flagship projects on electromobility, I-CVUE and ZeEUS, organised the 4th edition of the European Electromobility Stakeholder Forum in Brussels. With its cross-sectoral nature, the Forum is a unique European arena to share best practice and generate synergies across different electric transport modes.
This edition brought together over 200 representatives from government, industry, academia, and other stakeholders.

All the presentations from the different sessions are online now at: http://frevue.eu/events-home

Although the three projects demonstrate the viability of e-mobility and the way it makes our cities more sustainable, cleaner and quieter, fundamental challenges remain and many of these are shared among the different electromobility modes. In her opening words, Magda Kopczynska, Director for Innovative and Sustainable Mobility at the European Commission stressed “[…] the need to look at transport in a systemic way: We cannot address any of the challenges we face with one solution or one concept only. The great transport disruption will not be autonomous vehicles, but rather autonomous, electric and shared vehicles”.

Following this introduction, over 50 speakers shared their experiences, results achieved so far and remaining challenges. Key hurdles include the standardisation of charging infrastructure as well as current regulatory frameworks that can significantly slow down the electrification of transport modes. On the other hand, exciting opportunities and synergies between the modes were discussed, such as urban design and multimodal and interoperable charging infrastructure.

“Electrification of transport is a key enabler for imagining new concepts – like building an indoor bus stop where passengers’ shopping would be delivered by electric freight to enhance passenger’s experience. This approach confirms that the prominent need for the Forum to exist and to offer great cross-sectoral exchanges”, highlighted Ulf Gustafsson from Volvo.

The FREVUE (Freight Electric Vehicles in Urban Europe) project is an urban e-mobility project supported by the European Commission.

Recruit London candidates work at Gumball 3000!

26th May 2016 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP’s Specialist Workplace Coordinator, who supports people with disabilities and chronic health conditions as part of the Recruit London initiative, recently worked with the  Regent Street Association to place 10 candidates as paid volunteers for the Gumball 3000 event. The Regent Street association needed 20 people with a background in customer service to be trained as staffers for the event, and the Recruit London Specialist Workplace Coordinator was able to refer 10 unemployed candidates to this opportunity, all of whom were selected.

Each year Gumball 3000 organises a luxury automotive rally in which 100 of the world’s most spectacular supercars drive 3000 miles in seven days.  They host public and private events in each city they pass through. On May Day, Monday 2nd May 2016, Gumball 3000 returned to Regent Street and attracted well over 100,000 people.

Recruit London’s candidates assisted on the set up and breakdown of information points, lifting and carrying benches and plants to position on the streets, cable tying benches together, installing event branding on barriers using cable ties and cable cutters, and leafleting from information points on and around Regent Street.  Mainly, they assisted with ensuring that visitors from all over the world were made to feel welcome, were on hand to deal with queries and helping with giving directions.

All candidates have increased confidence after the event. One candidate Daniela said “I really enjoyed myself yesterday at the Gumball 3000. It helped my confidence”.  The Specialist Workplace Coordinator has continued to help them into work, and five now have interviews for paid opportunities!

Chrissie from the Regent Street Association said: “the referrals were great and all worked very hard (despite the rain)”!

Candidate Kiefer said: “I would not have known about it if I had not been asked to work.  It was such a good day. We worked really hard, but it didn’t feel like work”.

CRP secures £500,000 to deliver a focus on freight

24th May 2016 / Posted by CRP Team

Bag of Money

Cross River Partnership has secured new money from URBACT III to deliver the Freight TAILS project over the next two years.   Each of the 10 partner cities – central London (UK), Brussels (Belgium), Gdynia (Poland), La Rochelle (France), Maastricht (The Netherlands), Parma (Italy), Split (Croatia), Suceava (Romania), Tallinn (Estonia), and Umeå (Sweden) – will now work with local stakeholders to develop a set of integrated actions to address their freight management priorities. The partners will come together regularly to exchange knowledge and experiences.

In central London, we will be working with a broad range of stakeholders to identify actions that could be taken by organisations to help them make positive changes to reduce the impact of freight in the city.

If you would like more information on either the local or transnational elements of Freight TAILS please contact Charlotte at cknell1@westminster.gov.uk, and follow the project on twitter @freight_tails.

Green Sky Thinking – Realising the Low Line

23rd May 2016 / Posted by CRP Team

Cross River Partnership chaired the recent Green Sky Thinking – Realising the Low Line event organised by Team London Bridge. The event was well attended, a clear indication that this topic has generated a lot of interest.

There were various stakeholders represented, including the London Borough of Southwark, Network Rail, Better Bankside BID, Vauxhall One BID, and the Peckham Coal Line.

We have shared below the speakers presentations as well as some useful links.

  • The ‘London Bridge Plan’ is available here and the video that specifically focuses on the vision for arches and tunnels is here.
  • Cross River Partnership’s ‘Green Capital’ brochure on green infrastructure in London and the associated video.
  • The speakers’ presentations:

The next steps of this exciting programme is to set up a Steering Group with the various stakeholders to discuss how to realise the vision. CRP is pleased to be working with our partners to shape this programme.

Ultra Low Roadshow – Private Hire video

23rd May 2016 / Posted by CRP Team

In February, Cross River Partnership worked with Transport for London and assisted by the ‘Go Ultra Low’ campaign delivered an event for the private hire industry about the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The event brought together suppliers and experts to explain how ultra-low emission vehicles – electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids – can be a great choice for London’s private hire drivers and operators, as well as helping to improve the city’s air quality.

With a range of vehicles suitable for the private hire industry on display, stalls and exhibits offering expertise and services on ultra-low emission vehicles, it provided something for everybody.

CRP has produced a brief video through its Clean Air Better Business programme summarising the upcoming ULEZ and promoting what is available to the industry.

FREVUE Partners Meeting in Oslo

FREVUE Partners Meeting in Oslo

The FREVUE partners came together in Oslo on 20-21 April this year for their bi-annual meeting to discuss the project’s progress and to learn from each other’s experiences. The City of Oslo, one of the local FREVUE partners, generously hosted the 50-strong delegation in their impressive city hall.

The first day of the meeting was open to local stakeholders and included an introduction to the FREVUE project as well as the electric vehicle situation in Oslo and Norway. Oslo was an inspirational meeting location being the frontrunner in all things electro-mobility: A strong policy package of no purchase tax, no VAT, free parking, etc. has provided a very favourable environment for EVs in Norway with their market share having reached 22 percent in 2015, compared with under two percent in the UK.

Day 2 was open to partners only with more detailed discussions on individual work packages and deliverables. Since the last meeting six months earlier, data monitoring and collection has greatly improved, with the FREVUE analysis now firmly underway. The Consortium also voted for the accession of two new project partners, of whom one will trial a logistics model new to the project (Breytner) and the other will facilitate the procurement as well as data monitoring and collection of heavy duty electric freight vehicles (FIER). More details on both new partners will follow once their accession has been formalised.

The FREVUE (Freight Electric Vehicles in Urban Europe) project is an urban e-mobility project supported by the European Commission.

New West End Company Air Quality Roundtable

19th April 2016 / Posted by CRP Team

On Wednesday 6th April Cross River Partnership supported New West End Company at  their Air Quality Roundtable to gain business input into the New West End Company Air Quality Strategy 2016-2020.

It was attended by businesses and landowners that are leading action against air pollution; Councillor Heather Acton of Westminster City Council; Greater London Authority; and Transport for London.  New West End Company will be supporting their members and local businesses in tackling air quality issues by providing useful information; setting up the West End Buyers Club supplier consolidation; developing a business assessment tool and communicating best practice.

The strategy will have its grand launch at the New West End Air Quality Summit on 28th June 2016.  At this event businesses will be asked to take action to reduce volume of freight; encourage staff and visitors to cycle and walk; tackle emissions from buildings and increase green infrastructure.  The event will also see the launch of the West End Air Quality Awards, supported by the Mayor of London.  This exciting project is demonstrating that business is taking air quality seriously, and is working collaboratively to make the West End a cleaner place for visitors and residents alike.

For more information New West End Company will be communicating on the strategy using  #westendair or contact CRP Project Manager Vicky Keeble at vkeeble@westminster.gov.uk
