CRP officially launches London’s first electric workboat

28th November 2023 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

On 14 November, CRP launched Alb-E, London’s first electric workboat aboard the Dixie Queen at Butler’s Wharf Pier.

The official launch event was attended by vessel owner and project partner, Net Zero Marine (NZM), as well as participants such as Thames Marine Services and TMS Engineering. Many of our partners and stakeholders also attended, including our including our including our CRP Board public sector Co-Chair, Mary Durcan, Chairman of Port Health and Environmental Services Committee at the City of London Corporation.

Alb-E was converted from a diesel vessel to an electric one over the summer. The project was part of our Defra-funded Clean Air Logistics for London programme which wrapped up in June of this year.

Thanks to monitoring the vessel’s emissions, we were able to calculate that we have removed at least 2.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by making Alb-E electric.

Additionally, NZM expects to save money on fuelling costs – a single charge, which takes Alb-E 75 nautical miles, cost approximately £57 in September. To cover the same distance, diesel would cost £246.

Green Infrastructure

28th November 2023 / Posted by Susannah Wilks

Last week was #GreenInfrastructure week.

The Green Infrastructure Framework was launched back in January. The Green Infrastructure Framework is an invitation to re-imagine England’s towns and cities with nature at the heart, to help more people benefit from better access to nature and all its benefits for health, wellbeing, climate, and the economy.

Green Infrastructure is integral to addressing health inequalities, biodiversity loss, climate change, and levelling up. The Green Infrastructure Framework resources aim to:

  • inspire the creation of nature-rich, climate resilient towns and cities.
  • provide certainty about the quality and quantity of GI required to create better places for people to live, work and relax.
  • show how green infrastructure can support developers and local authorities in delivering statutory requirements such as Biodiversity Net Gain and Local Nature Recovery Strategies to support nature recovery.
  • provide a route map for developing good green infrastructure strategies.

CRP delivered a Mayor’s Air Quality Fund Round 3 programme called Healthy Streets Everyday, with 19 CRP Partners, that delivered all sorts of Green Infrastructure and other Air Quality-improving interventions. Read the programme summary on the CRP website.

We look forward to continuing to prioritise Green Infrastructure with all of our public and private sector partners.

CRP City Vision

28th November 2023 / Posted by Ross Phillips

Evidence has become critical to create healthy streets and neighbourhoods. Cross River Partnership‘s (CRP) insightful traffic and active travel reporting can support Local Authorities, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and landowners with evidence of how spaces, streets and neighbourhoods are used.

We measure and analyse movement and dwelling data at various scales to create clear and insightful reports. Our findings can provide the proof of concept to create long-term sustainable change in the public realm, and support local authorities and BIDs with an evidence base to make impactful changes to their areas.

CRP have partnered with Vivacity Labs to use their artificial intelligence sensors to provide insights and reporting into:

  • Active travel and traffic count analysis that measures all vehicle classes
  • Movement and directionality mapping, modelling and visualisation
  • Air quality and emissions modelling
  • Speed and road safety evidence
  • Public realm and behaviour analysis

CRP Micro Logistics Hubs – Updates

28th November 2023 / Posted by Isidora Rivera Vollmer

Happy to see our CRP micro logistics hub trials in Pimlico and Wandsworth progress so well these last few months! You can find our most up-to-date insights below:

Wandsworth Micro Logistics Hub Trial (ending on 21/02/24)

Positive impact after 2 months of operations:

  • Average of 163 daily parcels (fresh flowers) being moved via the hub
  • 2,208 kilometres (1,260 miles) travelled by electric vans
  • Total emissions reduction of 191 kg of CO2, 941 g of NOx, and 22 g of PM2.5
  • Translated into more tangible examples, by using our CRP Clean Air Tool, this would mean:
    • CO2 emissions from 3 football pitch-sized forest fires
    • NOx emissions equivalent to what 29 people emit in one day
    • 0.5 sycamore maple trees required to filter out these PM2.5 emissions
  • More information on the hub found here.

Pimlico Micro Logistics Hub Trial (ending on 31/12/23)

Positive impact after 7 months of operations:

  • The e-cargo bikes have travelled a total of 17,321 km (10,763 miles) so far
  • Total emissions reduction of 3,260 kg of CO2, 13,054 g of NOx, and 215 g of PM2.5 when compared to polluting van deliveries (calculations by Delivery Mates’ in-house emissions tool)
  • Translated into more tangible examples, by using our CRP Clean Air Tool, this would mean:
    • CO2 emissions from 66 football pitch-sized forest fires
    • NOx emissions equivalent to what 396 people emit in one day
    • 4.8 sycamore maple trees required to filter out these PM2.5 emissions
  • More information on the hub found here.

SGL’s November Task Force: the Key to Kerbside Management

28th November 2023 / Posted by Fiona Coull

This month CRP held the latest Task Force Meeting for the Smarter Greener Logistics (SGL) Programme. The Task Force focussed on the SGL kerbside management workstream, with a presentation and Q&A from GRID Smarter Cities.

This was particularly timely given that the King’s Speech referenced the requirement of Digitised Traffic Regulation Orders (DTROs) to enable digital kerbside management solutions.

As part of SGL, partners are being invited to take part in a ‘Kerbside Management Trial’, helping them to better understand how to utilise this technology and lead the way forward to unlocking the variety of benefits that it can provide.

The Task Force was a great opportunity for partners to learn more about the trial, decide if they want to participate, and to go over any specific questions with GRID about potential locations.

There was also an optional site visit to a digital loading bay on Abbey Orchard Street at the end of the task Force so that partners could see one in practice.

Finally, the event was also a lovely opportunity for SGL partners to network and understand more about activities in other boroughs and BID areas.

We look forward to the next SGL Task Force on the 19th of March 2024!

2023/24 Defra Air Quality Grant

10th October 2023 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

CRP are pleased to announce that we submitted our application last week for the next round of Air Quality Grants from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). The scheme helps eligible local authorities improve air quality and has awarded more than £90 million since 1997.

In recent years, CRP and project partners have been successful in our bid funding, award-winning schemes like Clean Air Villages, as well as Clean Air Logistics for London and our current Smarter Greener Logistics programme.

For this round, CRP have partnered with 21 organisations to reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions and other harmful emissions produced by how we move goods and services around London.  We hope for a successful bid when Defra announces the results in Spring 2024.

World Mental Health Day

10th October 2023 / Posted by Sobastian Frazer

World Mental Health Day will be held on Tuesday 10th October all around the world. It was first established on the 10th October 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), who will also be celebrating it’s 75 years of operation this year! WFMH are a global organization responsible for raising awareness in the global community about mental health agendas, collaborating with multiple partners, taking positive action, and developing long-lasting changes.

World Mental Health Day, is a day that encourages us to enhance our conversations about mental health, learning more about how mental health can affect you, your family, friends, colleagues or even your neighbour.

This year’s theme is “mental health is a universal human right”, understanding that we all have the right to be protected by mental health risks, the right to available, accessible, acceptable, and good quality care, and the right to liberty, independence, and inclusion in the community.

Find out more how you can get involved!

The CRP team will use their team meeting today to talk about what they do to look after their mental health.
