CALL Snapshot: Masthouse Terrace Pier

25th September 2023 / Posted by Sobastian Frazer

CRP’s Masthouse Terrace Pier: CALL snapshot provides an insight into the collaboration between CRP and the Port of London Authority (PLA) to create London’s first dedicated freight pier, located on the Isle of Dogs, East London.

In addition to the pier being used as a dedicated space for light freight, it also will continue to be an addition to the Uber Boat by Thames Clipper River Bus Service, providing the opportunity for both passenger and river freight operations. As part of the Defra-funded CALL programme, CRP and the PLA have also developed a guidance document to support pier owners and e-cargo bike operators to ensure the safe and efficient transfer of light freight between the river and shore.

‘OurBike’ Shared E-Cargo Bike Scheme launches in Islington

25th September 2023 / Posted by CRP Team

CRP have been working with the London Borough of Islington and OurBike to deliver a shared cargo bike scheme. The two bikes are located at Highbury Barn and on Blackstock Road, both on important high streets with a cluster of independent businesses. The scheme aims to reduce congestion and air pollution that would normally be created by vans, offering businesses an alternative greener way of moving goods around.

Read more about the Islington OurBike scheme here!

As part of Smarter Greener Logistics, CRP are committed to supporting additional OurBike schemes in Islington, Wandsworth, Richmond and Merton. The next step will be engaging with businesses to identify potential bike hosts in these boroughs!

Marking World Rivers Day

25th September 2023 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

To mark World Rivers Day on Thursday 21st September, CRP Project Manager Sefinat Otaru participated in a panel discussion at the Oxo Tower along London’s South Bank.

World Rivers Day, which falls on the fourth Sunday of every September, celebrates the world’s rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages better stewardship of the world’s waterways.

Chaired by Andrea Zick (Harvey Nichols), Michelle Yaa (Thames 21) and Sefinat discussed how the river affects our lives, and how we in turn impact the river. Following the discussion, attendees were encouraged to take part in litter picking along the Thames shore.

Seeking participants for Westminster Clean Air Walking Routes research

6th September 2023 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

Are you an avid walker or cyclist who uses apps and tools such as CRP’s Clean Air Route Finder to find less polluted routes?

Westminster City Council wants to understand people’s needs when walking around the borough and how air quality influences their choice of route.

The survey will take around 8 minutes to complete and will ask for some details about you, the things that are important to you when walking around the city and if you use any tools to monitor air quality of the places you visit.

The survey outcomes will be used to help the council meet the needs of people walking in the borough.

All participants will have a chance to enter a draw to win a £50 shopping voucher.

Additionally, at the end of the survey, you can choose to apply for further research activities and, if selected, you will be rewarded with shopping vouchers ranging from £15 to £45.

Please click here to complete the survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/x-87XQ6M/.

CALL Vessel Retrofit Complete

6th September 2023 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

As part of our Defra-funded Clean Air Logistics London project, we supported Net Zero Marine Services to retrofit their workboat, Alb-E.

The vessel’s diesel-powered engine was replaced with an electric motor and battery, making it the first fully electric workboat in London. By going electric, Alb-E effectively eliminated its air-polluting emissions, demonstrating how the transition to cleaner vessels on the Thames is possible.

Formerly named Albert, Alb-E is currently moored at Hermitage Pier. For more information, please contact CRP Project Manager Sefinat Otaru – sefinatotaru@crossriverpartnership.org

Strategic Approach to Arches

6th September 2023 / Posted by Susannah Wilks

The CRP Team is really pleased to be working with CRP Partners to continue a strategic approach to the form and use of railway arches, viaducts and undercroft spaces across London.

CRP’s interest in these spaces stretches back to its previous Light at the End of the Tunnel programme, which used Section 106 Planning Gain money to transform arches across the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, including: housing businesses, restaurants and bars; installing artistic lighting effects; creating new walking and cycling routes.

Since then, Boroughs and BIDs alike have seen the potential of arch and viaduct spaces and have trailblazed exciting programmes to bring them alive. The Low Line project and the Camden Highline are two cases in point.

CRP’s latest initiative involves supporting the creation of a freight hub in the undercroft space at Waterloo Station – sign up to our next CRP Conversation event on 11th October here to find out more.

Smarter Greener Logistics is Underway

6th September 2023 / Posted by Fiona Coull

Following a fantastic launch event at Somerset House in June, we’re really pleased that CRP’s Smarter Greener Logistics programme (SGL) is fully underway!

Over the last month, the CRP team have been working closely with partners to understand their main priorities and objectives for the programme. This has fed into the SGL programme development and delivery planning, which we updated partners on at our first Task Force Meeting on 21st August.

Starting with a tour of the Better Bankside Green Logistics Centre, the SGL Task Force was an opportunity for Partners to get together to discuss the SGL Programme, share ideas and network. The afternoon included a networking lunch, before diving into the main SGL Task Force Meeting to discuss programme delivery.

For more information about SGL, please contact CRP Senior Programme Manager Fiona Coull – fionacoull@crossriverpartnership.org

Month 4 of the Micro Logistics Hub Trial

6th September 2023 / Posted by Isidora Rivera Vollmer

Only 2 more months to go! We have gathered interesting insights of our micro logistics hub trial in Pimlico, Westminster City Council, so far:

🌷 4 main types of deliveries taking place from the hub: parcels, food, battery swaps, and fresh flowers

🗺️ 18 London boroughs currently being serviced by this hub

🔥 33 football pitch-sized forest fires worth of CO2 emissions have been saved so far

Throughout these four months so far, the e-cargo bikes have travelled 9,377 km (5,827 miles), which led to a total emissions reduction of 1,613 kg of CO2, 6,388 g of NOx, and 105 g of PM2.5 when compared to polluting van deliveries.

Read our CALL Snapshot about how we set up this hub here!

Discovering Hubs, Undercrofts and Arches

6th September 2023 / Posted by Ross Phillips

This month, members of the CRP team spent the morning discovering the hubs, undercrofts and arches from London Bridge to Waterloo Station. Unlocking the potential of underutilised space in London for sustainable logistics is a key aspect of CRP’s Smarter Greener Logistics (SGL) programme. SGL is a Defra-funded project led by Westminster City Council in collaboration with 26 project partners which aims to minimise the impact of freight on noise, air quality, traffic and pavement space in London.

The tour included a visit to the undercroft at London Bridge Station, the Pedal Me distribution centre and a micro logistics hub in Pimlico. The team also visited Waterloo, where CRP have been working to unlock the logistics potential of a large space beneath Waterloo Station.

For more information on Waterloo Station, please contact CRP Sustainable Transport Manager Ross Phillips – rossphillips@crossriverpartnership.org
