CALL Pier Usage Analysis Reports

10th October 2023 / Posted by Isidora Rivera Vollmer

Cross River Partnership are excited to publish our Pier Usage Analysis reports, which were created as part of CRP’s Defra-funded Clean Air Logistics for London (CALL) programme.

CRP’s Clean Air Logistics for London (CALL) is a Defra-funded project which aims to move more freight into London via river rather than road, supported by zero emission delivery methods in Central London.

The three reports focus on Greenland (Surrey Quays) Pier, Wapping Pier, and Woods Quay. This pier monitoring initiative seeks to understand movements around and onto/from certain piers and identify whether they may be suitable for future river freight operations based on their current underutilisation at specific time periods.

Smarter Greener Logistics Update

10th October 2023 / Posted by Fiona Coull

Another month has gone by of CRP’s Smarter Greener Logistics Programme and as usual the team have been working hard to get various programme schemes and initiatives off the ground!

This month has been a particularly big month for CRP’s Waterloo development work, with several reports and models being finalised and completed. These will be officially launched at CRP’s next CRP Conversations event, taking place in the Lord Mayors Parlour on Wednesday 11th of October (see here for more details). We would love to see you all there!

This month has also been particularly successful for the SGL Hub workstream. Over the last few weeks, CRP and Westminster City Council announced an extension of the Pimlico hub enabling low emission deliveries to be carried out for another 3 months in the Westminster area and beyond. Similarly, the Southside Shopping Centre Hub also successfully completed its first whole month of deliveries! These are both excellent outcomes, helping to improve air quality across London.

Finally, the end of October marks the deadline for CRP’s first quarterly report to Defra on the SGL programme. As part of this, all SGL Partners have been asked to complete their ‘Partner In Kind Match Funding Template’ by COP Friday 13th of October. This information is essential to feed into the quarterly reporting.

To find out more about the SGL Programme, or to get support regarding your Match Funding Template, please contact Senior Programme Manager Fiona Coull fionacoull@crossriverpartnership.org

Cross River Partnership soon to publish new research outputs supporting rail freight

10th October 2023 / Posted by Ross Phillips

Cross River Partnership is soon to be launching exciting research, that has been commissioned in collaboration with Network Rail and the Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT) and led by transport consultants Steer and Intermodality, to show the many positive impacts of increasing rail freight coming into Waterloo Station, supported by zero emission onward road journeys across the whole of London.

The Waterloo Freight Hub is planned to support London’s economy and environment by bringing more freight into central London via rail rather than via road.  Existing undercroft space at Waterloo Station would be used to receive, sort and re-issue the rail freight outwards across much of London, servicing some 3.5 million people and 200,000 businesses.  These onward journeys would all be undertaken by clean transport modes, including electric cargo bikes.  The journeys could save up to 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from London’s air from hundreds of cargo bike and other zero emission delivery trips, as well as make significant improvements to the noise levels associated with traditional vehicle types.

The Courier, Express and Parcel (CEP) market is growing significantly, particularly driven by a demand for faster, convenient and more efficient deliveries, and a higher percentages of retail sales now made online due to a booming ecommerce industry. Currently, just 1% of the rail freight transported on the UK’s rail network is from Courier, Express and Parcel market. There could be up to £1 billion parcels delivered in London in 2030, over double what is currently delivered now.

If you’d like to hear more about this research, please reach out to Ross Phillips, Sustainable Transport Manager at CRP rossphillips@crossriverpartnership.org

A Win for Wandsworth: CRP’s New Micro Logistics Hub Trial

25th September 2023 / Posted by Isidora Rivera Vollmer

CRP has recently launched its latest six-month micro logistics hub trial in the Southside Shopping Centre Car Park in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Funded by Defra in partnership with the London Borough of Wandsworth, this CRP trial is supporting low-emission last-mile deliveries in the London Borough of Wandsworth and surrounding areas. This initiative is funded by CRP’s Clean Air Logistics for London and Smarter Greener Logistics programmes. Deliveries are also operating to the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Merton across the tri-borough area.

The hub has been created by sustainable logistics experts Decarbon Logistics Solutions in partnership with APCOA Parking (UK) Limited, and deliveries will be carried out by low-emission courier Delivery Mates.

Our recent publication also includes details on the micro logistics hub’s set-up process here.

Smarter Greener Logistics Update

25th September 2023 / Posted by Fiona Coull

We’ve nearly finished the first quarter of CRP’s Smarter Greener Logistics Programme! The programme has got off to a flying start with several opportunities and trials being developed in collaboration with our partners. Here are just a few that the CRP team have been working on:

  •  Isidora has been identifying potential sites for urban logistics hubs that can support low emission deliveries in SGL partner areas. Low emissions couriers have also been contacted about these sites to help develop areas that will fit in with their long-term plans and aspirations. We’re still finalising the various options and Isidora will keep partners updated as things progress!
  • Katherine has been working with Grid Smarter Cities to develop a virtual loading bay trial that will be open to all SGL partners. Partners will be able to test Grids virtual loading bay technology in identified locations, helping to better understand the benefits and opportunities that could be provided by kerbside management solutions.
  • Charlie has been supporting the City Soil Lab Project in Bethnal Green. The project focuses on the circular economy and aims to turn neighbourhood food waste into soil to be used in community gardening and food projects. Plans to collect food waste by cargo bike as part of the scheme are progressing (and is where Charlie is providing his expertise).
  • Sefinat has been working to develop a questionnaire for businesses to support them with their fleet electrification. As part of this Sefinat has been liaising closely with EV charging providers to understand the various solutions we could provide through SGL. The questionnaire will be shared with all partners so that it can be sent to their various business networks.
  • Sobastian has been supporting the expansion of the ‘Our Bike’ scheme in several SGL partner areas. OurBike is a shared community cargo bike scheme that enables residents and businesses to hire an electric cargo bike by the hour, supporting more low emission trips in the local area.
  • Ross has been working with Network Rail and other partners to progress the Waterloo logistics hub. The aim is to carry out a road-fed urban logistics trial in the undercroft area beneath Waterloo Station. Rail fed freight will then be introduced as the scheme progresses, highlighting the opportunity for rail freight at major London stations.
