OurBike Launches in Islington

7th October 2024 / Posted by Sarah Meertens

Cross River Partnership (CRP) are excited to announce that we have launched two new OurBike community cargo bike in the London Borough of Islington

OurBike is an app based community cargo bike share scheme. The new bikes are hosted by Absolute Print in Archway and LC Cycleworx in Nag’s Head and can be used by businesses and residents at a subsidised rate for local deliveries, travelling with children or transporting larger items as a more sustainable transport mode.

We were joined for the launch by our partners from the London Borough of Islington, including Councillor Rowena Champion, Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality & Transport and Councillor Santiago Bell-Bradford, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Culture & Jobs, as well as our partners at OurBike.

Both bikes are stored near their host business. Find the exact locations here: Absolute Print OurBike and LC Cycleworx OurBike

CRP’s cargo bike share interventions are part of Smarter Greener Logistics (SGL) a Defra-funded project led by Westminster City Council in collaboration with 25 project partners. The project aims to minimise the impact of freight on noise, air quality, traffic and pavement space in London by making improvements across 14 London boroughs and two London Business Improvement Districts (BIDs).

Creating Just Streets With Londoners

7th October 2024 / Posted by Sefinat Otaru

We are thrilled to see the progress of our Horizon Europe project, Just Streets, in London.

Over the past few months, our London delivery partners, London Borough of Lambeth, Harley Street Business Improvement District, and Camden Town Unlimited have made significant strides in implementing street interventions to create more equitable and safer streets.

Take the latter, for instance. Camden Town Unlimited is working to promote active travel in the bustling part of London by encouraging walking through “Heritage Trails” between Camden and King’s Cross Station. They have engaged in several co-creation sessions with the public to gather diverse perspectives and ideas, including discussions on what the trails should encompass and what the wayfinding should entail.

It’s wonderful to see our partners involve the public in creating solutions that benefit everyone. We eagerly anticipate implementing these interventions by next spring.

Healthy Streets Everyday II Steering Group Meeting

7th October 2024 / Posted by Sobastian Frazer

Last month we were joined by our 14 project partners and the Greater London Authority (GLA) for our Healthy Streets Everyday II steering group meeting, a 3-year programme promoting active travel and green infrastructure under the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund.

The meeting was held at Westminster City Council and provided an excellent opportunity for our partners to share updates on their exciting HSEII interventions! This was then followed by a site visit to see London Borough of Lambeth’s School Street Plus and Kennington Oval Reimagined projects at St Mark’s Church of England Primary School and Henry Fawcett Primary School in Kennington.

Thank you to all partners for joining us. As HSE II develops, we’re thrilled about the innovative projects and collaborations that lie ahead!

SGL Express Delivery: Parcel Locker Installations & Requirements

7th October 2024 / Posted by Sobastian Frazer

CRP’s latest Smarter Greener Logistics Case Study is here!

Our insightful new case study explores the installation of parcel lockers on council-owned land and the innovative process behind making it happen. The case study reveals how creating a simple, standardized method for setting up and managing these non-permanent, flexible lockers can bring about huge benefits—socially, economically, and environmentally—for both local authorities and landowners.

These lockers offer a convenient self-service option via app or web browser, encouraging more people to walk or cycle to pick up their parcels. This not only reduces missed deliveries but also lowers the chances of theft or lost packages. On top of that, they help cut CO2 emissions from deliveries by an impressive 75%.

Check out the full case study for more details: https://crossriverpartnership.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/SGL-Express-Parcel-Lockers-800-x-5000-px.pdf

This case study forms part of CRP’s learning from their Defra-funded Smarter Greener Logistics programme!

Smarter Greener Logistics – October Update

7th October 2024 / Posted by Ross Phillips

It’s been a busy month for the CRP team throughout September and into October, with updates right across the programme workstreams and all across London.

This has included:

  • Launching 2 new shared cargo bikes in the London Borough of Islington through the OurBike scheme, with residents and businesses now able to use these to deliver goods across London by renting a cargo bike from Absolute Print in Archway and LC Cycleworx in Nag’s Head, Holloway.
  • Sharing knowledge and learnings with 3 additional SGL Express Case Studies.
  1. Parcel Locker Installations & Requirements
  2. Air Quality and Noise Monitoring in Merton
  3. City of London Virtual Loading Bays

The team have also been turning their talents towards data analysis, delivering another round of reporting for the London Borough of Southwark to understand the impact on cyclists and freight traffic of the recent installation of Cycleway 4 around Lower Road.

CRP also shared plenty of the freight and logistics work, particularly river freight related work, with Deputy Mayor for Environment & Energy at the Greater London Authority, Mete Coban, through a site visit through Vauxhall in early September.

We were also delighted to visit London Borough of Lambeth’s showcase School Street at Henry Fawcett Primary School with Councillor Rezina Chowdhury – thank you for the inspiration!

CRP Hosts Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy Mete Coban

6th September 2024 / Posted by Ross Phillips

CRP were honoured to have hosted the Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy Mete Coban, this week!

CRP led a fun and informative site visit, showcasing various city greening, sustainable transport and healthy streets initiatives delivered with support from Mayor of London.

The trip kicked off with a visit to the river to see two vessels, Driftwood II and Alb-E, retrofitted as part of previous CRP projects on Clean Air Logistics for London and Clean Air Thames.

After a small detour past some CRP greening and cycling initiatives in Vauxhall, the group then headed to Henry Fawcett Primary School to see the School Streets initiative in action, including experiencing it themselves with a fun game of ping pong!

As well as highlighting these impactful initiatives, it was a fantastic opportunity to discuss our shared vision for a sustainable future.

Thanks to all those who supported to organise this exciting afternoon trip!

World Rivers Day 2024

6th September 2024 / Posted by Sobastian Frazer

Sunday 22nd September marks World Rivers Day.

Founded by Mark Angelo, an internationally celebrated river conservationist, World River’s Day aims to celebrate and appreciate our free-flowing waterways, across countries and cities alike.

What can I do to celebrate World Rivers Day? Well, there are so many fantastic ways you can get involved! From simply joining a litter pick or beach clean up, to embarking on some fun water-based activities such as canoeing or kayaking.

You can also get into contact with local interest groups, including environmental groups, recycling, heritage, arts, and music societies or paddlers and birders. Helping different social groups will not only help the selection of causes but also further your contribution towards your local environment and connections your community has with its waters.

You can also head over to the World Rivers Day website for resources, ideas for events and for more information here: World Rivers Day 2024
