HSE Mural at Cayley Primary School

CRP is happy to announce that artists Viola Wang (@violawangstudio) and Allegra Fitzherbert (@allegra.fitz) have recently completed painting the commissioned mural, as a result of Healthy Street Everyday’s Car Free Day 2021 competition, at Cayley Primary School (Tower Hamlets)! The mural design is based on the winning drawing created by the student Maariya (from class 1a) as well on the drawings created by students from the school's Gifted & Talented programme.

CRP is happy to announce that the artist Aspire (@aspireartwork) has recently completed painting the commissioned mural, as a result of Healthy Street Everyday’s Car Free Day 2021 competition, at Middle Park Primary School, Eltham (Royal Borough of Greenwich)! The mural design is based on the winning drawing created by Ashae Millwood & Stanley Lorraine, two students from the school.

Mental health and wellbeing plan: discussion paper and call for evidence (England)

This discussion paper and call for evidence seek views on what Westminster’s Government can do to improve everyone’s mental health and wellbeing. This is an opportunity for practitioners to share the evidence on the benefits of green infrastructure to improve people’s mental health. The easiest way to participate in the call for evidence is by completing the online survey by 5th July 2022.

Parks and Green Spaces Research Portal

The Universities of Leeds and Sheffield in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and Green Flag Award have developed an international Parks and Green Spaces Research Portal hosted on the Green Flag Award. The Portal is a free online space that aims to foster knowledge exchange and promote opportunities to collaborate with other academics and professionals in the parks and green spaces sector, and internationally.

Dirty air affects 97% of UK homes, data shows

Virtually every home in the UK is subjected to air pollution above World Health Organization guidelines, according to the most detailed map of dirty air to date. More than 97% of addresses exceed WHO limits for at least one of three key pollutants, while 70% of addresses breach WHO limits for all three.

School run accounts for nearly 30% of morning traffic in London

Data shows that up to 43% of car trips in some parts of London are linked to the school drop off, as a Europe-wide campaign to urge city leaders to create new school streets launches in the city. Across London over a quarter (27%) of peak car driver trips in the morning are for school drop-off, while up to 43% of rush-hour car trips in some parts of London are linked to the school drop-off, according to data from Transport for London.

London borough integrates air quality monitors with digital screens

Imperial College London’s Environmental Research Group has teamed with media and infrastructure company Clear Channel for a pilot integrating air quality sensors into digital advertising displays in Barking and Dagenham. The Breathe London network is a new initiative developed by the ERG, funded by the mayor of London and Bloomberg Philanthropies, to provide real-time, hyperlocal air quality data to Londoners, via the Breathe London website.

School Streets closures improves streets for children, new study finds

A recent report authored by Asa Thomas, a PhD researcher at the Active Travel Academy, has found that ‘School streets’ closures in London have improved the overall experience for the children that are using them. The report is generously supported by the Mayor of London and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and was completed by the Active Travel Academy at the University of Westminster in collaboration with Cross River Partnership.

Report investigates effectiveness of School Street schemes

A new report has found that School Streets lead to significant reductions in motor vehicle traffic both during the closure time and over the whole day, with minimal change in pedestrian numbers and use of the space. The research from non-profit Cross River Partnership (CRP) and the University of Westminster’s Active Travel Academy focused on two School Street schemes in the London Borough of Hackney, evaluating their impact and effectiveness.

School streets: CCTV cameras erected on hundreds of London streets in school run crackdown

More than 500 “school streets” have been introduced in London in a bid to bring the school run by car to an end, Sadiq Khan announced on Thursday. School streets use CCTV cameras to restrict vehicle access to roads next to schools at the start and end of the school day, with any non-residents at risk of being fined. A total of 372 have been introduced since the start of the pandemic, helping to reduce road danger and pollution at the school gates. There are now 511 school streets across the capital, covering a quarter of primary schools.

Mayor announces plans to expand ULEZ London-wide

The Mayor of London will today announce that he has asked Transport for London (TfL) to consult on expanding the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to cover all of London in 2023. Early assessments of the London-wide ULEZ expansion indicate it would reduce NOx emissions from cars and vans by between 285 and 330 tonnes, leading to a reduction in NOx emissions from cars and vans in outer London of around 10%. The expansion is also predicted to reduce CO2 emissions in outer London by between 135,000 and 150,000 tonnes.
